SBRI 18 Phase 1

Project Angel - Using drones to deliver greener, faster and smarter healthcare to patients in the Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust.

  • Project duration: 10/01/2022 - 10/07/2022
  • Project funding: SBRI Healthcare – Competition 18 – Delivering a Net Zero NHS
  • Project location: Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust
  • Press release

The purpose of this project was to identify the need of using uncrewed aerial vehicles (UAVs) in healthcare, engage with the relevant stakeholders (both clinical and aviation) and complete our submission for regulatory approvals.

Phase 1 achievements:

  • Formal partnership with the Trust, including forming Northumbria's Working Group;
  • Identification of healthcare use cases to improve the Trust’s supply chain;
  • Design, routing and mapping for the first stage of the Northumbria Air Grid, a network of air corridors for UAV transportation between healthcare sites;
  • Completion of NHS’ first formal UAV tendering process;
  • Submission of aviation and healthcare regulatory approvals;
  • Carbon calculator development;
  • Stakeholder engagement and support;
  • Demonstration day in Northumbria.

After successfully delivering upon Phase 1, we are now preparing for the next phase of our project - to develop, test and implement a permanent, commercially available drone delivery service for both the patients and clinicians in Northumbria.
